2018 California Voter Registration – Top Ten Lists

Top Ten Lists of Registered Voters, Democrat, Republican and No Party Preference Counties in California (October 22, 2018)

Wondering if your county placed in a Top 10 List of California Voter Registration for 2018? As a statistics nerd, I’ve compiled the voter registration data sourced from the California Secretary of State website (as of 10/22/18) to create Top Ten Lists of Registered Voters, Democrat Voters, Republican Voters and No Party Preference Voters.

Placer County made it on 2 of the Top Ten Lists! If you’re curious about specific numbers for each city in Placer County (Auburn, Colfax, Lincoln, Loomis, Rocklin, Roseville and Unincorporated Area), I’ve included the numbers at the bottom of this blog post.

To begin with, here are the top ten counties in California with the highest percentage of Registered Voters:

  1. Marin County – 88.47% (160,944 voters)
  2. San Benito County – 87.77% (30,064 voters)
  3. Nevada County – 87.72% (68,954 voters)
  4. Lassen County – 86.49% (14,332 voters)
  5. El Dorado County – 85.79% (121,192 voters)
  6. Placer County – 84.86% (234,732 voters)
  7. Los Angeles County – 84.76% (5,280,658 voters)
  8. Napa County – 84.59% (78,135 voters)
  9. Santa Cruz County – 84.02% (159,499 voters)
  10. Sierra County – 83.52% (2,190 voters)

On the left, here are the top 10 counties in California with the highest percentage of registered Democrats:

  1. San Francisco County –  56.84% (284,218 voters)
  2. Alameda County – 55.67% (490,683 voters)
  3. Marin County – 55.56% (89,425 voters)
  4. Santa Cruz County – 54.59% (87,066 voters)
  5. Sonoma County – 51.92% (142,401 voters)
  6. San Mateo County – 50.31% (200,913 voters)
  7. Los Angeles County – 50.08% (2,644,567 voters)
  8. Monterey County – 49.23% (92,224 voters)
  9. Contra Costa County – 48.86% (303,591 voters)
  10. Imperial County – 47.53% (33,144 voters)

On the right, here are the top 10 counties in California with the highest percentage of registered Republicans:

  1. Modoc County – 49.26% (2,521 voters)
  2. Lassen County – 48.55% (6,958 voters)
  3. Shasta County – 46.01% (46,825 voters)
  4. Amador County – 43.99% (9,812 voters)
  5. Tehama County – 42.69% (14,210 voters)
  6. Mariposa County – 42.54% (4,617 voters)
  7. Glenn County – 42.31% (5,280 voters) and Plumas County – 42.31% (5,386 voters)
  8. Placer County – 41.71% (97,895 voters)
  9. Calaveras County – 41.45% (12,264 voters)
  10. Tuolomne County – 41.22% (13,190 voters)

Finally, here is the top ten list of the highest percentage of California registered voters with No Party Preference:

  1. Santa Clara County – 33.67% (298,259 voters)
  2. San Francisco County – 32.65% (163,256 voters)
  3. San Diego County – 30.81% (536,646 voters)
  4. San Mateo County – 30.69% (122,542 voters)
  5. Imperial County – 29.43% (20,522 voters)
  6. Alameda County – 29.16% (257,081 voters)
  7. Yuba County – 29.13% (9,831 voters)
  8. Lake County – 28.77% (9,394 voters)
  9. Mono County – 28.65% (1,890 voters)
  10. Los Angeles County – 28.05% (1,481,287 voters)

Right down the middle are two counties with almost equal percentages on both sides: San Luis Obispo County with 34.50% (59,530) registered Democrats and 34.84% (60,117) registered Republicans and Butte County with 34.91% (42,843) registered Democrats and 34.18% (41,955) registered Republicans. Another noteworthy mention is Orange County with 33.56% (523,624) registered Democrats and 34.72% (541,665) registered Republicans.

Overall statewide, there are a total of 78.16% (19,696,371) registered voters, 43.5% (8,557,427) Democrats, 24.0% (4,735,054) Republicans and 27.5% (5,419,607) No Party Preference.

California Voter Registration - Top Ten Democrat Republican

Interesting tidbit: Placer County had the highest number of Libertarians in the state of California at 1.62% (3,803) registered voters.

Here is a list specific to Placer County voter registration statistics by city and unincorporated area:

  • Auburn – 9,174 voters: 32.50% (2,982) Democrat, 37.13% (3,406) Republican
  • Colfax – 1,029 voters: 28.47% (293) Democrat, 36.83% (379) Republican
  • Lincoln – 29,359 voters: 28.03% (8,230) Democrat, 43.82% (12,865) Republican
  • Loomis – 4,497 voters: 21.61% (972) Democrat, 48.85% (2,197) Republican
  • Rocklin – 38,419 voters: 27.66% (10,628) Democrat, 41.13% (15,801) Republican
  • Roseville – 79,501 voters: 29.79% (23,681) Democrat, 39.27% (31,222) Republican
  • Unincorporated Area – 72,753 voters: 26.82% (19,517) Democrat, 44.02% (32,025) Republican
